Quick answer: As at 10 October 2026, all 10 CRMs we scored auto-capture activity and draft for approval; 9 can update deal fields unattended and 8 can send email unattended. Pipedrive gates every field update; in the pages we read, Pipedrive and Day.ai stop at email drafts. In 8 of the 9, unattended writes start only once you configure them.
“Autonomous CRM” is now a product claim (Clarify’s home page calls it “The Autonomous CRM”), and it means different things depending on who says it. This page splits the phrase into five levels, scores ten CRMs against one written rule using each vendor’s own help centre, product pages and training sites, and then tells you which level to switch on first. It is not about connecting an outside AI agent to your CRM; if that is your question, our field-sync blueprint for connecting an AI agent to HubSpot and Salesforce covers it.
Where Zian fits: an agent platform that writes into your CRM, not a CRM
Zian is not on the matrix because it is not a CRM, and scoring it against CRMs would be the kind of comparison this page exists to avoid. Zian is an autonomous AI sales-agents platform. Its agents work leads across live phone, SMS, email and WhatsApp, in 30+ languages with voice cloning, and its features page describes it as CRM-first with HubSpot, Salesforce and HighLevel, plus Zapier and an API. Its plans do list contact management and bookings, and agency-client relationship management, but the system of record in a Zian deployment is your CRM.
That makes the ladder a useful way to see the division of labour. Your CRM supplies L1 and L2: the record, the capture and the fields. An agent platform supplies L4 on the channels where the CRMs above document no unattended set-up, which in the pages we read is everything except email and LinkedIn. SmartReach AI™ decides the message, channel and timing with follow-up pacing; PrecisionPitch AI™ split-tests scripts and approaches against outcomes. Zian reports that its AI books 40+ meetings a week for many teams. If your gap is email, a CRM at L4 may be enough on its own; if your gap is the phone, ask your CRM vendor for its outbound-calling set-up documentation before assuming it covers you.
What does “autonomous CRM” actually mean?
Strip the marketing away and a CRM can do five increasingly hands-off things. We call it the CRM Autonomy Ladder, and each rung has a test you can apply to any vendor’s documentation in about ten minutes.
| Level | Name | The test: what happens with no person clicking | What it replaces |
|---|---|---|---|
| L0 | Manual entry | Nothing. A rep types the call, the email and the stage change. | Nothing; this is the baseline every CRM supports |
| L1 | Auto-capture | Emails, meetings or calls land on the right record, and contacts are created from them | Logging activity and creating contacts by hand |
| L2 | Auto-update | AI writes a value into a deal or contact field (stage, next step, a custom field) from a conversation or signal | The Friday afternoon pipeline clean-up |
| L3 | Agent drafts | AI prepares an outbound email or a proposed change and queues it for a person to approve | Writing the follow-up from a blank screen |
| L4 | Agent acts | AI writes and sends a customer-facing message with no person approving that message | The first touches of an SDR’s day |
Two clarifications make the ladder usable. First, switching a play, sequence or agent on once is set-up, not approval; a product reaches L4 if, after that switch, individual messages go out unreviewed. Second, a templated sequence with merge fields is not L4. The AI has to write or rewrite the words.
The single most useful sentence on this page: in 2026 an autonomous CRM is not a product you buy but a setting you switch on; 9 of the 10 CRMs we scored can change your fields without asking, and in 8 of those 9 that only happens after someone configures a workflow, an agent, a mode or a setting. So the question that separates vendors is not “can it act?” but “what stops it, and can you undo it?”
Which CRMs are autonomous in 2026? The scored matrix
The one rule we applied to every row: a cell reads Yes only if a page the vendor publishes describes that level’s action happening with no person approving each instance. It reads Approval if the vendor says a person approves each instance, and Not found if the pages we read (listed in the source table) did not show it, which is not a claim that the feature does not exist. Beta and pilot features are labelled in the cell. A vendor’s top level is the highest level marked Yes. Everything was read on 10 October 2026.
| CRM (AI brand) | L1 Auto-capture | L2 Auto-update | L3 Agent drafts | L4 Agent acts | Top level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Sales Cloud (Agentforce) | Yes: Einstein Activity Capture adds emails and events to the activity timeline | Yes: opportunity updates to Stage and Next Steps in “autonomous mode” | Yes: “suggestive mode” to review, edit and approve updates | Yes: the Lead Nurturing (Engagement) agent sends an initial email and nudges after you activate it | L4 |

| Attio | Yes: email and calendar sync creates people and company records | Yes: a workflow agent block followed by Update record | Yes: agents drafting follow-ups and nudges | Yes, assembled: a workflow enrols a person in a sequence that uses AI variables (sequences on Pro and Enterprise) | L4 |
| Clarify | Yes: contacts and companies created from meetings and sent email | Yes, via agents (Post-Meeting CRM Update); native deal-field suggestions are Approval | Yes: Inbox Reply Drafter and Post-Meeting Follow-Up save drafts for review | Yes: the agent email tool can “send emails automatically when configured” | L4 |
| Lightfield | Yes: email, calendar and meeting capture linked to records | Yes, via Workflows (Pro plan), whose agent step can create and update records; native suggested updates are Approval | Yes: the For review queue of drafted emails | Yes: agent-personalised sequences send after a single Activate | L4 |
| Day.ai | Yes: contacts populated from Gmail; meetings recorded | Yes, natively: once a pipeline exists, opportunities are created automatically and custom properties populated from conversations | Yes: follow-up drafts, one click to send each | Not found | L3 |
| folk | Yes: emails, calendar events and WhatsApp chats added to profiles in real time | Yes: AI fields with “auto-fill based on defined trigger” | Yes: Follow-up Assistant suggests a pre-written follow-up | Yes: Workflow Assistant sends an automated email, rewritten by AI if enabled | L4 |
Read the tallies before the names. All ten reach L1 and L3. Nine reach L2; only Pipedrive keeps every AI field update behind approval. Eight reach L4; Pipedrive and Day.ai stop at drafts in the pages we read. With the field that close, the useful comparison is not which level a vendor reaches but how it gets there, which the next two sections set out.
Unattended field updates: on by default, or something you switch on?
Nine of the ten can change a deal or contact field without a person approving it. What differs is where that behaviour lives, and the vendors’ own pages are unusually consistent: the AI built into the record view asks first, and unattended writes sit in automation a team configures.
| CRM | Built-in AI field updates | Where unattended field writes live |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce | A mode you choose: suggestive (review, edit, approve) or autonomous | Autonomous mode for opportunity updates |
| HubSpot | Smart properties are filled when someone runs them, unless auto-fill is set up | A workflow using the “Data Agent: Fill Smart Property” action, or smart property auto-fill on a schedule or at record creation |
| Dynamics 365 Sales | Data Enrichment suggestions; sellers apply with one click | “Automatically update fields”, off by default; applied daily |
| Zoho CRM | Zia suggestions and recommendations | A Zia agent you build with tools to update records |
| Pipedrive | Nova suggestions, “side by side with the current value” | None found: Nova does not update your CRM without review and approval |
| Attio | AI attributes only run when someone runs them | A workflow with an agent block followed by Update record |
| Clarify | Deal-field suggestions it “never applies” on its own (it does rewrite deal summaries automatically; we do not count a summary as a field) | An agent such as Post-Meeting CRM Update |
| Lightfield | Suggested record updates; “Nothing changes in your CRM without your approval” | A workflow whose agent step updates records (Pro plan) |
| Day.ai | Opportunities and default custom properties populated automatically | Native, once a pipeline is set up |
| folk | AI fields filled on request | An AI field with “auto-fill based on defined trigger” switched on |
Count the third column: 9 vendors have an unattended path, and 8 of them put it behind a configured workflow, agent, mode or setting. Day.ai is the exception, creating opportunities and filling properties as standard once a pipeline exists. Pipedrive has no unattended path in the pages we read.
Two caveats from the vendors themselves. Lightfield’s pricing page lists “Automatic record updates” on its Starter plan while its help centre answers “Does Lightfield automatically apply record updates?” with “No”, and its product page says “Nothing changes in your CRM without your approval”; we scored those. Another help-centre article says “meeting transcripts update opportunity fields”, so ask Lightfield which behaviour your plan has. And Microsoft notes that even with automatic updates on, sellers “can still review the changes made by the agent and revert them”, while Clarify states plainly that “There is no undo for agent actions.”
That makes undo the sharpest single test in this category. An AI that moves a deal to Closed Lost on a misread email changes your forecast before anyone notices; whether you can see and reverse the change matters more than whether it could make it. If you are designing which fields an AI may own, the rule from our comparison of the four kinds of CRM write, from activity log to stage change applies: let the AI write its own namespaced fields freely, and gate the fields that feed the forecast. Dynamics 365 builds that in, with a field-scope list of fields its agent must not touch.
How L4 ships: a native agent, or something you assemble
The eight L4 products reach it in three different ways, and the difference decides how much set-up your team inherits.
| Route to L4 | CRMs | What you configure | The documented brake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packaged agent with a send mode | Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics 365 | A play or agent: audience, value proposition, sender, then a review-or-send setting | HubSpot: “Review emails”; Salesforce: preview before Activate Agent; Dynamics: Research-only mode |
| Agent you build from instructions and tools | Zoho, Clarify | Instructions, a trigger, and per-tool permissions (Zoho also offers ready-to-use agents, including an SDR agent, in its Zia Agents Store) | Clarify: tools that write or change data arrive set to Ask permission until you switch them to Always allow; Zoho: human-in-the-loop execution |
| Assembled from workflow plus sequence | Attio, Lightfield, folk | A trigger, then a sequence or email step whose copy the AI personalises | Lightfield: nothing sends until Activate; folk: preview before sending; Attio: publish before enrolling |
Every L4 action we found documented in these pages is an email, with LinkedIn steps also available in Lightfield sequences. Salesforce’s Trailhead describes Agentforce engaging leads “across every channel”, and its Agentforce Voice page markets voice agents for “every phone call” with a demo line that opens “just following up on the proposal I sent over”. We did not find, in the pages we read on 10 October 2026, set-up documentation for an unattended outbound calling programme from any of the ten; Lightfield’s help centre states it has no built-in dialer at all.
Dynamics 365 shows how fast these agent line-ups move: Microsoft says no new Sales Close Agent instances can be created from 30 September 2026 and existing ones are removed on 30 October 2026, with the Sales Development agent (preview) as the replacement. That agent, still in preview, updates a lead to qualified or disqualified from the prospect’s email reply.
Two vendors print the sentences that should weigh most in your decision. Clarify’s own advice, given that agent actions cannot be undone, is to use approval mode until you trust an agent; agents its assistant builds for you are switched on as soon as they are created, after it asks whether the agent should act automatically or ask for approval first. Zoho says low-confidence outcomes are “surfaced as recommendations rather than automated actions”, so on uncertain cases its agents behave like L3, holding the action for a person.
For the general version of this trade-off across AI SDR tools, see our vendor audit of autopilot versus copilot approval modes.
Worked example: what “autonomous” sending really delivers per day
Autonomy is not volume. CRM-native sending runs through a rep’s own mailbox, and the vendors protect that mailbox with pacing rules. Clarify publishes its rules precisely, so it makes a clean worked example you can redo with any vendor’s numbers.
- Clarify sends campaign emails one at a time with a fixed 3-minute gap, counted only while your sending window is open.
- The default window is 9:00am to 5:00pm on weekdays: 8 hours, or 480 minutes.
- 480 minutes divided by 3 is 160 emails a day per connected account, the same figure Clarify’s help centre gives.
- There is also a hard cap of 250 emails per day per account. The gap and the cap meet at a window of 250 × 3 = 750 minutes, or 12.5 hours.
- A 1,000-contact first touch from one account at the default window takes 1,000 ÷ 160 = 6.25, so 7 weekdays, before any follow-up step goes out.
Substitute your own list size and window. If the answer is longer than the window in which your leads are warm, the constraint is sending capacity, not autonomy, and no level on the ladder fixes that. It is also why speed-to-lead work is usually done by a channel other than a rep’s inbox, as our guide to responding to leads in under a minute with AI agents sets out.
Need the L4 work done on the phone, by SMS or on WhatsApp, not only by email? Zian’s AI sales agents work leads across live phone, SMS, email and WhatsApp and write the outcome back into HubSpot, Salesforce or HighLevel. Zian is in partnership-application beta.
Best autonomous CRM for sales teams 2026: who each option is wrong for
A comparison is only useful if it tells you where each product does not fit. Each line below comes from the vendor’s own page.
| CRM | Strongest at | Wrong for | Why, from its own docs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Agentforce | Both L2 modes on one switch; packaged L4 agent | Teams without a Salesforce admin to run set-up | Set-up runs through enabling Agentforce, the Engagement agent, permissions, Einstein Activity Capture, Inbox and Data 360 (Salesforce says Salesforce Go makes most of these steps quick, “with just a few clicks”) |
| HubSpot Breeze | L4 with a clear review-or-send setting per agent | Teams that cannot forecast credit spend | Credits are consumed for each lead the agent writes outreach for; smart properties use credits even when no value is filled |
| Dynamics 365 Sales | Revertible automatic field updates with a field-scope exclusion list | Teams that want a stable agent line-up | The Sales Close Agent (preview) takes no new instances from 30 September 2026 and is removed on 30 October 2026; its replacement is in preview |
| Zoho CRM | Agents built to your own rules and guardrails | Teams wanting agents to act on late-stage deals | Zoho advises action-oriented agents early in the cycle and suggestion-oriented agents near the close; low-confidence outcomes become recommendations |
| Pipedrive | Careful L1 to L3 with a strong mobile app | Teams that need unattended sending | Nova changes nothing without approval; AI email creation is Premium and higher; several AI features are beta |
| Attio | Flexible L2 and L4 through Workflows | Teams wanting autonomy out of the box | AI attributes do not run automatically; L4 needs a workflow plus a sequence; sequences are Pro and Enterprise |
| Clarify | Agents built from a plain-language description, with per-tool permissions | Teams that need to reverse a bad write | “There is no undo for agent actions”; no exportable audit log as at 10 October 2026 |
| Lightfield | Capture and agent-written sequences | Phone-heavy or field teams | As at 10 October 2026, no built-in dialer or automatic call tracking and no native iOS or Android app; Workflows and sequences are on the Pro plan |
| Day.ai | The one native, unconfigured L2 we found in the ten (pipelines and custom properties are on its Professional plan) | Teams wanting L4 | Follow-ups are drafts with one click to send; the company now describes itself as a “context graph and agent control plane” |
| folk | L4 for small teams, including WhatsApp capture | Teams that need full history on the base plan | The Standard plan shows a maximum of 30 interactions per contact, with 3 years of history |
Best CRM for sales AI agents for mobile and field reps
For reps who sell from a car, L1 matters more than L4: the CRM has to capture a call made from a phone. Only some of the ten document that.
- Pipedrive’s iPhone and Android app logs in-app calls automatically and has a “Nearby” map of deals, organisations and people. Nova’s desktop app records phone and in-person calls without a bot.
- Attio has iOS (iOS 26 or later) and Android (Android 13 or later) apps that play back call recordings and live transcripts.
- folk has a mobile app, Contacts by folk, on iOS and Android.
- Lightfield’s help centre says, as at 10 October 2026, that it has no native mobile app (it suggests saving the web app to your home screen) and cannot automatically track phone calls.
The rule for a field team is simple: score L1 for calls made on a mobile, not for email, before you look at any agent feature.
Which level should you switch on first?
| If this is true of your team | Switch on | Shortlist from the matrix |
|---|---|---|
| Reps skip logging calls and emails | L1 first; nothing above it works on an empty record | Any of the ten; for mobile calls, Pipedrive or Attio |
| Stages and next steps are stale by Friday | L2, but only on fields that do not feed the forecast, at first | Any except Pipedrive; Dynamics 365 (field-scope list and revert) or Salesforce (suggestive mode first) if forecast fields are in scope |
| Follow-ups are slow but tone is sensitive | L3 and stay there | Any of the ten; Pipedrive and Day.ai stop here by design in the pages we read |
| First touches to inbound or warm leads by email | L4 on one segment, with stop-on-reply | HubSpot, Salesforce, Dynamics 365, Clarify, Lightfield, folk, Attio, Zoho |
| First touch must be under a minute, or by phone or SMS | An agent platform writing into the CRM | None of the ten documents unattended outbound calling set-up in the pages we read; Salesforce markets Agentforce Voice |
| A wrong automatic write would be costly to miss | L2 only where changes can be reviewed and reverted | Dynamics 365 (revert); avoid Clarify agents in Always allow mode (no undo) |
| A list larger than about 160 first touches per mailbox per day (Clarify’s default window) | Dedicated sending infrastructure, not CRM-native L4 | See the worked example above |
Frequently asked questions
What is the best autonomous CRM for sales teams in 2026?
There is no single winner on autonomy: all 10 CRMs we scored auto-capture activity and draft for approval, 9 can update fields unattended and 8 can send email unattended. Choose on the controls instead. Dynamics 365 lets sellers revert automatic field updates and exclude fields; Clarify says there is no undo for agent actions; Pipedrive gates every update.
Does any CRM update deal stages by itself?
Nine of the ten can, but in eight of them only after you configure it. Salesforce documents an autonomous mode for Stage and Next Steps, Dynamics 365 has an “Automatically update fields” setting that is off by default, and Clarify agents can update stages after meetings. Day.ai creates opportunities on its own once a pipeline exists. Pipedrive Nova waits for approval on every update.
Can an AI CRM send emails without me approving each one?
Several can. HubSpot’s prospecting agent has a “Send without review” option, and Microsoft’s Sales Qualification Agent overview says its Research and engage mode sends outreach and follow-up emails autonomously. Clarify warns there is no undo for agent actions, so start in approval mode.
Is an autonomous CRM the same as an AI SDR?
No. An autonomous CRM is the system of record that captures activity and can act on it; an AI SDR is an agent that works leads, often from outside the CRM. The two overlap at L4, where CRMs now send email. Salesforce markets Agentforce Voice for phone calls, but in the pages we read on 10 October 2026 none of the ten documented how to set up unattended outbound calling.
Which autonomous CRM works best for field and mobile reps?
Score call capture on a phone first. Pipedrive’s mobile app logs in-app calls automatically and maps nearby deals; Attio has iOS and Android apps with call recordings. Lightfield’s help centre says it has no native mobile app and no automatic call tracking.
Is Zian an autonomous CRM?
No. Zian is an AI sales-agents platform that works leads by phone, SMS, email and WhatsApp and writes into HubSpot, Salesforce or HighLevel, with Zapier and an API for other systems. Your CRM stays the system of record.

Keep your CRM as the system of record and add agents that work the phone. Zian’s AI sales agents call, text, email and message leads on WhatsApp, then write the outcome back into HubSpot, Salesforce or HighLevel. Zian is in partnership-application beta.
