How to Set Up an AI Receptionist on Your iPhone

Quick answer: to set up an AI receptionist on your iPhone or Android mobile, forward the calls you miss to the number the AI answers on. Set your carrier’s conditional forwards for no answer, busy and unreachable: **61*, **67* and **62* on T-Mobile, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, *71 on Verizon, or the phone’s Call forwarding menu on AT&T. By default, Telstra waits 15 seconds before forwarding an unanswered call. Turn off Live Voicemail first, then test each condition.

The forwarding happens in your carrier’s network, so the codes come from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, not from Apple or Google. Your phone’s job is to stay out of the way: iOS Live Voicemail, iOS Call Screening, Pixel Call Screen and Pixel Take a Message can all pick up before the carrier’s timer runs out. Every code here is quoted from the carrier’s, Apple’s or Google’s own page, read on 24 October 2026. We have not dialled them ourselves, so test each one on your own line.

Where Zian fits on a forwarded mobile line

Once the forward works, the call reaches whatever answers that number, and that is what decides whether the caller books or hangs up. We publish Zian AI and it is our pick for that job: its AI Receptionist answers inbound calls 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the appointment, transfers to a person or takes a message, and follows up afterwards by voice, SMS, email, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs or Facebook Messenger. It works in 30+ languages, handles answering machines and voicemail on calls, and connects to HubSpot, Salesforce, HighLevel and Zapier. It has set 50,769+ qualified sales appointments.

If you would rather someone else ran it, LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you option. It is a managed, pay-per-result appointment-setting service that runs on Zian and answers leads in under 60 seconds, 24/7. The honest gap: Zian is in a partnership-application beta and publishes no prices. Each of its three listed plans, including Intel + Widgets (Free Forever), starts with a partnership application. Disclosure: zian.ai publishes this page, and no other AI receptionist is ranked on it.

How to set up an AI receptionist on iPhone: the six steps

This works on iPhone or Android, in the US or Australia. Steps 1 and 6 are the ones people skip, and they are the only way to know the forward works and to undo it cleanly.

  1. Day one: write down what your line does now. Dial *#61#, the status code Telstra and Vodafone both document for no-answer forwarding, and note the number it shows. That is where your unanswered calls go today, and you will need it to put things back later. Verizon’s pages give no status code, so on Verizon, write down that you will use *73 to undo.
  2. Get the number your AI receptionist answers on, and check that your carrier will forward to it. US carriers will only forward within the US. AT&T says “You can’t forward calls to an international number”, and Verizon requires a US number of 10 digits that is an active voice-capable line. Vodafone Australia will not divert calls to 13, 1300 or 1800 numbers. Vodafone prepaid services can only divert to voicemail or Call Catcher. Optus says a postpaid mobile cannot divert to an international number.
  3. Turn off the features on your phone that answer first. On iPhone, that means Live Voicemail (Settings > Apps > Phone), which Telstra notes is “turned on by default from iOS 18 onwards”. On a Pixel, it means Take a Message and automatic Call Screen. The reasons are in the comparison section below.
  4. Set the three conditional forwards to the AI number, either with your carrier’s codes or with your Android phone’s Call forwarding menu. The iPhone’s own Call Forwarding switch only forwards every call, so for missed calls only you need the codes, or on AT&T, AT&T’s help.
  5. Set how long the phone rings first, if your carrier lets you. T-Mobile allows 5 to 30 seconds. Telstra allows 15 to 30 seconds and Optus 5 to 30 seconds, both in 5-second steps, and Vodafone’s device guide takes a value in seconds that is divisible by 5.
  6. Test from a number that is not in your contacts. Make three test calls: one you let ring out, one while you are already on another call, and one with the phone in flight mode. Each should reach the AI, except that on Verizon, whose pages give no unreachable code, the flight-mode call may still go to voicemail. Then check the AI’s call log to see which number it recorded for the caller.

The finish state: you are done when a stranger can ring your mobile, you can ignore it, and within the ring time you set the call is answered by the AI receptionist, not by your voicemail. That caller then appears in the AI’s log with their own number, and your phone still rings first for every call.

The AI side of the setup, from phone numbers and telephony bridges to booking and warm transfer, is covered step by step in our guide on how to build an AI receptionist and when not to.

Conditional or unconditional call forwarding: which one should go to the AI?

Mobile networks recognise four forwarding conditions. They have the same names on AT&T’s Android device guide, Telstra’s support page and Vodafone Australia’s support page, and they use the same GSM code numbers on the carriers that publish codes.

Condition GSM code number When it fires, in the carrier’s words Send it to the AI?
No answer 61 Telstra: “Forwards calls if you don’t answer within 15 seconds.” AT&T: “if you don’t answer after a few rings.” Yes. This is the main one.
Busy 67 AT&T: “if you’re already on another call.” Vodafone: “On another call or call rejected.” Yes. On Vodafone, declining a call also triggers it.
Unreachable 62 Telstra: “if your phone is switched off or out of network coverage.” AT&T adds aeroplane mode. Yes. It covers flat batteries, flights and black spots.
Unconditional (all calls) 21 Telstra: “Forwards calls to another number immediately.” Verizon: “your mobile phone won’t ring.” Only if the AI should take every call and your phone should never ring.

If the business line is in your pocket, set all three conditional forwards and no unconditional one. Your phone rings first; if you are on a job, on another call or out of coverage, the AI answers. Unconditional forwarding suits a line the AI should always answer, such as an after-hours bookings number.

Carrier call forwarding codes: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone

Replace [AI number] with the number your AI receptionist answers on. T-Mobile’s page writes the number as 1 followed by the 10 digits. Verizon’s page uses the 10 digits with no 1. Telstra’s page includes the area code and ends each code with *11#. Dial each code as if you were making a call. These are copied from each carrier’s page as written on 24 October 2026; we did not dial them.

AT&T says that “you can only change your call forwarding settings from your wireless phone” and that you cannot manage it online. Its device guides walk you through the phone’s own menu. We could not find wireless star codes on the AT&T pages we opened (the wireless call forwarding article, the Pixel 10a device guide and the wireless troubleshooting page), as at 24 October 2026. On an iPhone on AT&T, Apple’s menu gives you only the forward-everything switch, so ask AT&T how to set the conditional forwards.

Verizon combines busy and no answer in one code. Its page describes *71 as forwarding when “the original device is busy or unanswered after 3-6 rings instead of being sent to voicemail”. If the code fails, Verizon says to contact Customer Service.

T-Mobile and Telstra both use ##004#, but it does different things. T-Mobile says it “Resets call forwarding to default”, and its troubleshooting page says it resets the busy, unreachable and no-reply settings. Telstra says ##004# removes all three conditional forwards to MessageBank, which leaves you with no voicemail, and that **004*101# restores them. If you are on Telstra and want your voicemail back, use the restore code.

Optus publishes the codes on its current support page for managing call diversions: add a diversion with **, the code, *, the target number, **, the ring time and #; remove one with ##, the code and #. You can also set diversions in the My Optus app. Optus’s ring-time page gives **61*Number**XX# and says the ring time “can be set in increments of 5 seconds to a maximum of 30 seconds”. Optus’s older device guides, written for an iPhone 6 on iOS 10 and an iPhone X on iOS 12, show a single asterisk before the seconds (*20#); use the two-asterisk form from the current page.

How to forward calls on iPhone, and what the Settings menu cannot do

Apple’s menu path in iOS 27 is Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Forwarding. Turn on Call Forwarding, choose a line if your iPhone has Dual SIM, then tap Forward To and enter the number. A Call Forwarding icon appears in the status bar while it is on.

Apple’s own page sets out three limits that matter here:

  • It forwards every call. The switch is unconditional. Apple says: “If your carrier supports conditional call forwarding when the line is busy or not in service, contact them for setup information.” For an AI receptionist that only takes the calls you miss, you need the carrier codes in the table above, which you dial from the iPhone’s keypad.
  • It needs a GSM network. Apple says you can set up call forwarding on iPhone “if you have cellular service through a GSM network”, and that on a CDMA network you should contact your carrier.
  • You must be in coverage. “You must be in range of the cellular network when you set iPhone to forward calls, or calls won’t be forwarded.”

One more iPhone behaviour catches people. Apple says iPhone “alerts you and blocks links in messages, email, webpages, or apps that ask you to turn on call forwarding,” because scammers use them. If a provider sends you a tap-to-forward link, type the code into the keypad yourself instead.

How to forward calls on Android

On Android, the conditional forwards are in the phone’s own menu, so you do not need codes. AT&T’s device guide for the Google Pixel 10a gives the path as Phone app > Sidebar icon > Settings > Calling accounts > choose the SIM > Call forwarding. It lists four options: Always forward, When busy, When unanswered and When unreachable. Set the last three to the AI number. Other Android phones may label the menu differently, so check your carrier’s device guide for your model; the four options are the same conditions as the GSM codes. The codes in the table work from any phone’s keypad on carriers that publish them.

Google’s Phone app help does not change the number of rings. Its call settings page says: “Many phone carriers offer the ability to change the ring duration or number of rings before incoming calls go to voicemail. To change this setting, consult your phone carrier.”

How many rings before an unanswered call forwards to the AI?

The no-answer timer belongs to your carrier, not your phone, and it decides whether the AI picks up while the caller is still on the line.

Carrier Default before no-answer forwarding Can you change it? How, per the carrier
AT&T “after a few rings” Not stated on the AT&T pages we read Not stated
Verizon “3-6 rings” Not stated on the Verizon pages we read Not stated
T-Mobile Not stated Yes: 5, 10, 15, up to 30 seconds T-Mobile’s example: **61*1[AI number]**10# for 10 seconds
Telstra 15 seconds Yes: 15 to 30 seconds in 5-second steps Telstra’s page gives **61*101**30#, written for MessageBank (101)
Optus Not stated Yes: 5 to 30 seconds in 5-second steps **61*[AI number]**[seconds]#, per Optus’s ring-time page
Vodafone Not stated Yes: set in the code **61*[AI number]*20# on Vodafone’s iPhone 14 Pro (iOS 16) guide, “divisible by 5”. Telstra, Optus and T-Mobile put two asterisks before the seconds, so confirm the format with Vodafone

Pick the shortest ring time in which you can realistically reach your phone. On Telstra, the ring-time code on the page is written for MessageBank (101), so set the forward to the AI number with the standard code and ask Telstra for the matching ring-time sequence if you need longer than 15 seconds. On an iPhone, Telstra adds a condition that matters: “To extend ring time beyond 15 seconds on Apple devices, you must turn Live Voicemail off.”

Will Live Voicemail or Call Screening stop my forward from working?

They can, because they answer on the phone before the network forwards the call. Apple’s Live Voicemail, Google’s Take a Message and Google’s Call Screen are free and built in, and for screening spam they are very good. But each one is a small answering machine on your handset, and a call answered on the handset is a call the carrier never forwards.

Here is what each vendor says, beside what an AI receptionist does with the same call:

What answers What it does with the caller Effect on conditional forwarding Cost
AI receptionist (Zian AI, our pick) Answers 24/7, qualifies, books, transfers or takes a message; follows up by SMS, WhatsApp, email or voice It is the forward’s destination Zian publishes no prices (partnership-application beta)
iPhone Live Voicemail Shows “a real-time transcription” while the caller leaves a message; you can pick up Telstra: if Live Voicemail is active, voicemails are “saved to your phone, not to Telstra MessageBank”, and rings over 15 seconds need it turned off Built in; Apple says “Calling and data rates may apply”
iPhone Call Screening (Ask Reason for Calling) “automatically answers calls from unknown numbers”; once the caller gives their name and reason, the iPhone rings We could not find an Apple page that says how it interacts with carrier forwarding, as at 24 October 2026. Test it. Built in
Pixel Call Screen (automatic) Asks who is calling and why; hangs up on spam, rings you for the rest Google: “If you use call forwarding, don’t use automatic call screening. Screened calls won’t be forwarded.” Built in; “works on your device”
Pixel Take a Message Records and transcribes a message for missed or declined calls Google: calls it answers “are treated as ‘Answered’ by your carrier” “at no charge”
Carrier voicemail Plays your greeting and records a message It is the destination you are replacing. AT&T: “Call forwarding overrides your wireless voicemail.” Part of your plan

The practical rule is one answerer per condition. If the AI is your no-answer destination, turn off Live Voicemail on iPhone, and Take a Message and automatic Call Screen on a Pixel, then rerun the ring-out test. Google’s page says Take a Message falls back to voicemail when “The phone rings too long before the feature can start”: the feature and the network timer are racing for the same call.

iOS Call Screening is a harder call for a business line, because new customers are unknown numbers. With Ask Reason for Calling, Apple says those calls “will be asked for more information before iPhone rings”, so a new lead talks to Siri first, and Siri speaks the iPhone’s default language. Place a test call from an unsaved number and listen to what the caller hears.

Apple’s iOS 27 feature-availability page lists Live Voicemail and Call Screening for English (Australia) and English (United States). Google lists automatic Call Screen on Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US.

Caller ID, texts and missed-call text back on a forwarded mobile

Three things change once calls are forwarded, and you only see them when you test.

Which number the AI sees. None of the carrier pages we read says whether the original caller’s number is passed along on a forwarded call. Telephony platforms can also receive a separate “forwarded from” value. Twilio’s documentation says its ForwardedFrom parameter “is set only when Twilio receives a forwarded call, but its value depends on the caller’s carrier including information when forwarding. Not all carriers support passing this information.” If it matters which of your lines forwarded the call, give each line its own AI number.

Texts are not forwarded. Verizon says plainly: “Call Forwarding won’t forward text messages you receive on your mobile phone, only calls.” A customer who texts your mobile still texts you, not the AI. If you want messaging covered too, the AI has to be on a channel the customer actually uses, such as an SMS number, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs or Facebook Messenger.

Missed-call text back becomes a fallback. Once the AI answers the forward, the call is no longer missed, so a text-back should only fire for callers who hung up before the AI picked up. If your calls currently ring a HighLevel number that forwards to your mobile, the order matters. Our walkthrough of missed call text back in HighLevel explains why a forwarded call answered by a mobile’s voicemail can be logged as “Completed” and never trigger the text.

What forwarded calls cost on each carrier

A forwarded call has a second leg, out to the AI number. Here is what each carrier says it costs, as at 24 October 2026.

Carrier What the carrier says forwarded calls cost
AT&T “Forwarded calls are billed for the length of the call.” They “may incur long distance and/or roaming charges”. “With some AT&T wireless plans, call forwarding minutes aren’t counted against the minutes included in the plan.”
Verizon “If you don’t have unlimited minutes, you’ll be billed for all forwarded calls according to your plan.” There is “no monthly fee for Call Forwarding on most plans”, and “A fee may apply on certain older plans.”
T-Mobile Not stated on the T-Mobile calling-services or short-codes pages we read.
Telstra “Call forwarding is included in all plans with unlimited call allowance.”
Optus Optus: “You won’t be charged for the initial incoming call to your Postpaid Mobile (before the call diverts). You’ll be charged for the second leg of the call”, at your plan’s rates for local, national and mobile numbers. On Prepaid, the second leg to those numbers is “Charged at 10c per minute”. On Postpaid, “You cannot divert to an international number.”
Vodafone “There aren’t any additional costs to use call forwarding when you’re in Australia.” Conditional forwarding to a number other than voicemail while roaming on Pay As You Go rates means you are charged both for the call from Australia and the diversion back.

The carrier charge is usually the small part of the bill. The AI receptionist’s own charge per minute, per call or per month is the bigger one, and those pricing units are compared in our breakdown of what an AI receptionist costs a small business.

Why is my call forwarding not working? Symptoms, causes and fixes

A failed forward is usually silent: the caller gets your voicemail and you assume it worked. Work down this table in order.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Unanswered calls still reach voicemail, not the AI An on-phone answerer took the call first (Live Voicemail, Take a Message, Pixel Call Screen), or the no-answer code never registered Turn those features off, dial *#61# to check what no-answer forwarding points at, and re-enter the code
Calls screened on a Pixel never reach the AI Google: “Screened calls won’t be forwarded” Turn off automatic Call Screen on any line that forwards
The code returns an error on an iPhone Apple: forwarding on iPhone needs a GSM network, and you must be in coverage when you set it Set it with signal; on CDMA or if the code fails, ask the carrier (Verizon says to contact Customer Service)
A “tap to set up forwarding” link does nothing on iPhone iPhone blocks links that ask you to turn on call forwarding Type the code into the keypad yourself
Callers hear a busy signal AT&T: “If the designated forwarding number is busy, callers to your number will receive a busy signal.” Verizon: a mistyped number is not recognised Re-enter the full number; ask your AI provider how many calls the number can take at once
Forwarding to an overseas AI number fails from a US mobile AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile do not forward to international numbers Use a US number for the AI
Forwarding to a 1300 or 1800 number fails on Vodafone Vodafone does not divert to 13, 1300 or 1800 numbers; prepaid can divert only to voicemail or Call Catcher Use a standard Australian mobile or landline number, on a postpaid plan
Your phone has stopped ringing at all Unconditional forwarding (21) was set instead of the conditional forwards Cancel it: ##21# on T-Mobile or Telstra, #21# on Vodafone, *73 on Verizon
After removing the forward on Telstra, voicemail is gone ##004# removes all three conditional forwards to MessageBank Dial **004*101# to restore them
The AI’s log shows the wrong caller number or no forwarding line Carriers differ in what they pass on a forwarded call Test from a known number; give each forwarded line its own AI number

Some problems are not on the handset at all. International forwarding has its own regulatory rules about the caller ID a forwarded leg may present, as our page on forwarded calls that stopped connecting from Spain explains. A US or Australian mobile forwarding to a domestic AI number is a different case, but it shows why the caller ID on a forwarded leg is worth checking.

Doing it yourself versus handing it over

The mobile half is a short job: dial the codes, make three test calls. The real work is on the other side of the forward: an answering number, a voice agent that books into your calendar, a transfer path to you and follow-up for callers who hang up. To set that up and tune it yourself, use a platform such as Zian; to have it run for you and paid on results, use a managed service such as LeadsNow.ai. If you miss almost no calls, the free Live Voicemail or Pixel Take a Message may be all you need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up an AI receptionist on my iPhone?

Forward the calls you miss to the number the AI receptionist answers on. iPhone Settings only forwards every call, so dial your carrier’s conditional codes from the keypad instead: **61* (no answer), **67* (busy) and **62* (unreachable) on T-Mobile, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, or *71 on Verizon. Turn off Live Voicemail first, then test each condition from an unsaved number.

Can iPhone forward only the calls I don’t answer?

Not from the Settings menu. Apple’s Call Forwarding switch forwards all calls, and Apple’s own page says to contact your carrier for conditional forwarding when the line is busy or not in service. Dial the carrier’s no-answer, busy and unreachable codes from the keypad instead.

How many rings before a call forwards to my AI receptionist?

It depends on the carrier. Verizon says “3-6 rings”, Telstra defaults to 15 seconds and allows 15 to 30, and T-Mobile allows 5 to 30 seconds. Optus allows 5 to 30 seconds in 5-second steps, and Vodafone takes a value in seconds, divisible by 5, inside the no-answer code.

Why do my calls still go to voicemail after I set up forwarding?

Usually because something on the phone answered first. Telstra says that with Live Voicemail active, voicemails are saved to the phone, and Google says calls taken by Take a Message count as answered. Turn those features off, check the forward with *#61#, and test again.

Does Pixel Call Screen work with call forwarding?

Not automatic screening. Google’s help page says “If you use call forwarding, don’t use automatic call screening. Screened calls won’t be forwarded.” Turn automatic Call Screen off on any line that forwards to an AI receptionist.

Do forwarded calls cost extra?

Sometimes. AT&T bills forwarded calls for their length, although some plans don’t count those minutes. Verizon bills them under your plan if you don’t have unlimited minutes. Telstra includes forwarding in plans with unlimited calls, and Vodafone says there is no extra cost in Australia.

Will texts to my mobile go to the AI receptionist too?

No. Verizon says call forwarding forwards only calls, not text messages. Texts still arrive on your phone, so cover messaging with a separate channel such as an SMS number, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs or Facebook Messenger.
