Quick answer: On 22 October 2026 we scored Zian and 9 other AI answering products against four contractor jobs: documented emergency escalation, booking into ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro, live transfer to an on-call line, and texting the caller. Four documented all four: ServiceTitan’s own Voice Agent, Jobber Receptionist, Avoca and Sameday. Zian is our platform pick; LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you pick.
The best AI answering service for contractors is the one that does the dangerous call right and the boring call completely. The dangerous call is a gas smell at 2 am. The boring call is a drain clearing that has to land on the dispatch board with the right job type. This page ranks the products a US plumbing, HVAC, electrical or general contracting business is likely to shortlist, gives you an emergency call ladder to hand to whichever one you pick, and shows which field-service integrations are confirmed on both sides of the connection.
Where Zian fits for a US contracting business
Zian is our first pick when you want one AI agent to answer every inbound call 24/7 and also run the follow-up: it qualifies, books, transfers and takes messages, then follows up by voice, SMS and WhatsApp. It is the platform choice for a contractor who wants the same agent answering the phone, chasing the unbooked estimate and confirming tomorrow’s visit, rather than one tool for each job.
What Zian publishes: an AI Receptionist for inbound calls around the clock, an Inbound Appointment Setter and an Outbound Appointment Setter, follow-up across voice calls, SMS, email, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger, answering-machine handling, 30+ languages, and CRM integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce, HighLevel and Zapier. Its features and integrations page (zian.ai/features-integrations/) adds an API “for custom workflows” and says agent rules are configurable. Across the platform, Zian reports 50,769+ qualified sales appointments set.
The honest gap, in one line: Zian does not list a ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro integration, so booking into those systems is a build through the API or Zapier, scoped with you, not a setting. Jobber and Housecall Pro both list Zapier on their own integration pages, and Jobber also lists HighLevel, so the route exists; it still has to be built and tested. Zian is in a partnership-application beta, and each of its three listed plans, including Intel + Widgets (Free Forever), starts with a partnership application.
If you would rather not build or run any of this, LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you option: a managed, pay-per-result AI appointment-setting service that runs on Zian, publishes 50,769+ appointments, and says every lead is answered in under 60 seconds, 24/7.
Best AI answering service for contractors: the ranked list
Zian and LeadsNow.ai sit first and second by our own editorial choice (see the disclosure below). The rest are ordered by how many of the four contractor jobs their own pages document in full, then by how many field-service systems they name, then alphabetically. How we scored this page (methodology and disclosure). Inclusion rule: from the products a US contractor is likely to shortlist, a product is scored if an AI voice agent answers the call itself and the vendor’s own site sells it to US home-service or trades businesses. Ruby is excluded because its home page describes “real people with AI-enhanced technology”, which is a human-first service. Emergency escalation documented: Yes means the vendor’s own page or help article describes detecting an emergency and a named action (transfer, page or notify a person, route to on-call); Partial means emergencies are mentioned without that action, or only generic transfer rules exist. Books into a field-service system: Yes means the vendor says it books or creates jobs in ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro and that system’s own marketplace or integrations page lists it (or the vendor is the system); Partial means the vendor’s page only; Not named means no ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro on the vendor’s pages. Live transfer: Yes means a call can be put through live to a person or number you set; Partial means routing is named without a live transfer destination. Texts the caller: Yes means the vendor says the AI texts the caller; Partial means alpha, “coming soon”, or documented only for a different tier. Every vendor fact was read on that vendor’s own pages, including its own blog, on 22 October 2026. getjobber.com refuses our server, so Jobber’s pages were read through the r.jina.ai text reader. Disclosure: zian.ai publishes this list and Zian appears in it at number 1; LeadsNow.ai runs on Zian. Prices are not compared here; our AI receptionist cost breakdown does that.
The emergency call ladder: what the AI does when a caller smells gas
An AI answering service for a plumbing or HVAC business needs a written ladder, because the model will otherwise try to be helpful, and helpful is the wrong instinct on a gas call. The rule for every rung is the same: the AI follows a script you wrote, it never troubleshoots, and it never talks a caller out of treating something as an emergency. The safety lines below come from US government and utility pages; the response times are the targets you set, not vendor figures.
| Caller says | AI action | Who is reached | Target time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “I smell gas” / “rotten eggs” | Tells the caller to leave on foot now, not to use switches or start a car, to warn others away if it is safe, and to call 911 and the gas utility once away from the smell. Then ends the call so the caller is not on a phone inside. | The caller reaches 911 and the gas company; the AI then alerts your on-call tech | First thing it says, before any booking question | PHMSA, CenterPoint Energy |
| “The CO alarm is going off” / headaches, dizziness | Tells the caller to get outside to fresh air and call 911; does not book a visit first. | 911; then your on-call HVAC tech by transfer or text alert | Immediately | CPSC (suspected CO poisoning) |
| “Sparks”, “burning smell”, “smoke from the panel” | Tells the caller to call 911 if there is fire or smoke; captures the address; escalates. | Caller to 911; AI to your on-call electrician | Immediately | Your business rule |
| “Water is coming through the ceiling” / burst pipe | Reads your shut-off instruction if you have written one, captures address and access, transfers. | Live transfer to the on-call plumber; text alert if unanswered | During the call | Your rule; Dialzara documents shut-off advice (page) |
| “No heat” or “no AC” with an infant, elderly or unwell occupant | Flags as urgent, offers the first emergency slot or transfers. | On-call HVAC tech | During the call | Your rule; Jobber’s page gives “no heat” as an example urgent keyword |
| “How much will it cost?” | States only the dispatch or diagnostic fee you published; says the job price depends on what the technician finds. | Office the next business day if the caller presses | Next business day | Your price book |
| Routine repair, estimate, maintenance | Books the visit or estimate into your field-service system and texts a confirmation. | Nobody woken | During the call | Your booking rules |
The gas rung is the one most scripts get wrong. The federal pipeline regulator, PHMSA, lists using “a telephone or cell phone” among the things not to do near a leak, and its list of things to do is: make sure gas appliances are turned all the way off, leave the area, phone 911 “from a neighbor’s house or other location well away from the gas leak”, explain the situation, and warn others if it is safe to do so. That means the AI’s job on a gas call is to get the caller off the phone and out of the building, not to keep them talking while it collects an address. CenterPoint Energy gives the same order: leave on foot, then call the utility and 911 once safe.
One regulator page cuts the other way, and you should know it. Connecticut’s utility regulator says a smell near an appliance “may be just a pilot light that has gone out”, and that a homeowner who can fix it may have solved the problem; the same page says to leave and then call “if the smell is strong or you are unsure”. That judgment belongs to the person in the house and the gas company. An AI on the phone cannot smell the room, so the ladder treats every gas report as the “unsure” case.
ServiceTitan’s own release note shows why the ladder has to be written down. It says that before the change, “emergency calls such as gas leaks or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms” were “processed as routine bookings”, and that the updated Voice Agent now detects emergency keywords, applies an after-hours fee and assigns the job to the on-call technician. Booking and dispatch are the right response to a burst pipe. For gas and CO, put the leave-and-call 911 script ahead of any booking step, whichever product you choose. If your line could ever be the number someone dials in a real emergency, read our note on whether an AI receptionist has to support 911 calls.
Which AI answering services book jobs into ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro?
A booking that does not land in your field-service system is a message with extra steps. We checked each claim from both ends: the answering vendor’s own integration page, and the field-service company’s own marketplace or integrations list: the ServiceTitan Marketplace, Jobber’s App Marketplace page and Housecall Pro’s integrations page. “Both sides” is the strongest evidence; “vendor page only” means the vendor says it but the field-service company’s public list did not show it on 22 October 2026.
| Product | ServiceTitan | Jobber | Housecall Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| ServiceTitan AI Voice Agent | Native; marketplace lists it as Built by ServiceTitan (listing) | No | No |
| Jobber Receptionist | No | Native (Jobber page) | No |
| Housecall Pro CSR AI | No | No | Native (Housecall Pro page) |
| Avoca | Both sides: Avoca page; Certified App listing | Vendor page only (Avoca page) | Vendor page only (Avoca page) |
| Sameday | Both sides: Sameday page; Certified App listing | Vendor page only, general wording (Sameday page) | Vendor page only (Sameday page) |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | Vendor page only: creates records, schedules via Scheduling Pro (Smith.ai post) | Vendor page only: native calendar booking, Zapier client creation (Smith.ai page) | Vendor page only: books via your online scheduling link (Smith.ai post) |
| Goodcall | Vendor page only, “via API” (Goodcall page) | Vendor page only, “via API” (Goodcall page) | Vendor page only, “via API” (Goodcall page) |
| Dialzara | Vendor blog only, “via Zapier” (Dialzara post) | Vendor blog only, “via Zapier” (Dialzara post) | Vendor blog only, “via Zapier” (Dialzara post) |
| Rosie | Vendor blog only, “using our Zapier integration” (Rosie post) | Vendor blog only, “using our Zapier integration” (Rosie post) | Vendor blog only, “using our Zapier integration” (Rosie post) |
| Zian AI | Not named; API and Zapier (zian.ai/features-integrations/) | Not named; Zapier and HighLevel are both on Jobber’s list | Not named; Zapier is on Housecall Pro’s list |
Two cautions on reading that matrix. First, “vendor page only” is not “false”: a vendor can connect through a field-service API without appearing on the public list, and the marketplace link inside Jobber’s product points to its logged-in app, which we did not read. Ask the vendor to show a test booking landing on your own board before you sign. Second, Jobber’s public page does list other AI phone apps that we did not score, including Conju, ConvoForms and ServiceAgent, so a Jobber shop has more choices than this table shows.
On-call technician hand-off: what happens after hours
The after-hours job is not answering; it is reaching the right person and leaving them enough to act on. The field-service-native products have an advantage here because the on-call roster lives in the same system. Housecall Pro lets you set “a separate after-hours number for your on-call line”, and its help article says emergency handling “is always on, so this only changes how you’re notified, not whether”. ServiceTitan says that when Dispatch Pro assigns an after-hours job booked by the Voice Agent, the agent calls and texts the assigned technician with the job date, time, address and type (FAQ).
The independents describe the same hand-off in their own words. Sameday’s emergency triage playbook says true emergencies “page your on-call tech with the address and a summary; the customer gets an ETA”. Avoca says emergency calls are routed to your on-call tech immediately. Jobber Receptionist transfers on the urgent keywords you choose, or sends you a text alert. Rosie’s emergency restoration page says she “immediately alerts your on-call team” and will “call your on-call crew so she can patch the caller through to them”, while its plumbing page says “she can’t dispatch plumbers directly”: she reaches your people, and your people dispatch. Goodcall’s home page says its transfers “go to the right person, with a backup if they don’t pick up”.
The sentence that most weakens the case for any of them: every escalation fires only on the rules or keywords you configure. Jobber says so outright (“Choose the keywords that mean urgent for your business”), and ServiceTitan’s escalation paths are keyword lists you write. The ladder above is the input those settings need.
The texting half matters too. A caller who hung up before the AI answered is still a job, and Jobber says its Receptionist “can even text back callers who hang up”. If you run HighLevel, our missed call text-back setup in HighLevel shows the same idea built by hand, with the A2P 10DLC registration US texting needs.
Apply For Partnership: Zian’s AI Receptionist answers inbound calls 24/7, qualifies, books, transfers and takes messages, then follows up by SMS and WhatsApp. Tell us which field-service system you run.
Estimate visits and quoting: the AI must not invent a price
An AI answering service for contractors should book the estimate visit, not give the estimate. A price spoken on your line is one your business is asked to honour, and the scope of a repiping job or a heat-pump swap is unknown until someone is on site. The safe rule is short: the AI may state a dispatch or diagnostic fee you have published, and nothing else.
The field-service-native products give you a control for exactly this. ServiceTitan lists “Custom Dispatch Fee Messaging” and lets you set job types so the agent knows “what it can, and can’t book” (ServiceTitan page). Housecall Pro’s settings include a place to “define how CSR handles pricing questions”. Jobber lets you “set rules for what it should and shouldn’t do on a call”. Whichever you pick, write the pricing answer yourself and test it by calling in and pushing for a number.
Estimate visits are a booking with a different job type. Jobber’s demo invites callers to “request an estimate”, Housecall Pro’s permissions cover booking “jobs and estimates”, and Avoca and Sameday both sell outbound follow-up on open estimates. Check that the estimate lands as an estimate in your system, not as a service call your technician shows up to unprepared.
Who each option is wrong for
The field-service-native receptionists (ServiceTitan, Jobber, Housecall Pro) are wrong for you if you might change field-service software, or if you want one agent that is not tied to a single field-service account. ServiceTitan’s texting is tied to ServiceTitan tracking numbers. Housecall Pro’s text answering is still in alpha.
Avoca and Sameday are wrong for a shop on Jobber or Housecall Pro that needs the integration proven on the field-service side today; both are confirmed on the ServiceTitan Marketplace, and their Jobber and Housecall Pro connections were on their own pages only. Smith.ai suits a shop that wants a human safety net: its HVAC page says live receptionists take the emergency coordination. Goodcall, Dialzara and Rosie suit smaller shops that do not need the booking proven on the field-service side: Goodcall, Dialzara and Rosie describe ServiceTitan, Jobber and Housecall Pro connections only on their own pages (Dialzara and Rosie through Zapier); Rosie alerts and patches through your on-call crew but “can’t dispatch plumbers directly”.
Zian is wrong for you if you want a ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro connection that works on day one without scoping. LeadsNow.ai is wrong for you if you want to run the agent yourself. And if you take six calls a day and return them all within the hour, you may not need any of this; fix your voicemail greeting and call forwarding first. If you are tempted to assemble your own, our guide to building an AI receptionist shows what the phone line, transfer and voicemail parts take.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI answering service for contractors?
It depends on the system you already run. Zian is our platform pick for one agent that answers inbound calls 24/7 and runs SMS and WhatsApp follow-up, and LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you pick. Among the field-service-native options, ServiceTitan’s Voice Agent, Jobber Receptionist, Avoca and Sameday documented all four contractor jobs we scored on 22 October 2026.
What should an AI answering service tell a caller who smells gas?
To leave the building on foot, avoid switches, phones and starting a car, and call 911 and the gas utility once away from the smell. The federal pipeline regulator PHMSA says to make sure gas appliances are turned all the way off, leave the area, phone 911 “from a neighbor’s house or other location well away from the gas leak”, explain the situation, and warn others if it is safe. The AI should never troubleshoot a gas smell.
Can an AI answering service book jobs into ServiceTitan?
Yes. ServiceTitan sells its own Voice Agent, and Avoca and Sameday are both listed as Certified Apps on the ServiceTitan Marketplace and say they book into ServiceTitan. Smith.ai, Goodcall, Dialzara and Rosie (the last two through Zapier) describe ServiceTitan connections on their own pages, but we did not find them on the marketplace on 22 October 2026.
Does Jobber have its own AI receptionist?
Yes. Jobber Receptionist answers calls and texts, books visits into the Jobber schedule using your online booking settings, and transfers or texts you when a caller uses an urgent keyword you chose, such as “burst pipe” or “no heat”.
Does Housecall Pro’s CSR AI handle emergency calls after hours?
Yes. Housecall Pro’s help article says emergency handling is always on, and you choose whether emergencies forward to a number, such as a separate on-call line, or send you a text alert. Its text answering was still labelled alpha on 22 October 2026.
Should an AI answering service quote prices to callers?
Only a dispatch or diagnostic fee you have published. The job price depends on what the technician finds, so the AI should book the estimate visit and hand pricing pushback to a person. ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro and Jobber each give you a setting to control what the AI says about price.
Does Zian integrate with ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro?
Not as a listed integration. Zian publishes integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce, HighLevel and Zapier, plus an API for custom workflows. Connecting to a field-service system is scoped build work during the partnership-application beta, not a setting.
