Smith.ai vs Answering Legal for Law Firm Intake - Zian AI

Smith.ai vs Answering Legal for Law Firm Intake

Quick answer: Smith.ai vs Answering Legal comes down to who answers and how you pay. Answering Legal puts a US-based human legal receptionist on every call, bills by the minute and shows current prices only after a contact form. Smith.ai bills per call: at 300 calls a month it publishes $500 for its AI Receptionist, $771 to $1,131 for Hybrid, depending on which calls go to a person, and $2,100 for human receptionists (USD, as at 6 November 2026).

This page compares Answering Legal, the New York answering service whose receptionists, it says, answer “exclusively for lawyers”, with Smith.ai, which sells AI, Hybrid and human receptionists, on law-firm intake: who answers, billing, conflict checks, Clio Grow, Clio Manage, MyCase, Lawmatics and Smokeball connections, after-hours cover and Spanish. Vendor facts come from each vendor’s own pages, read on 6 November 2026; we did not use either vendor’s page about the other.

Where Zian fits for a law firm’s phones

Zian AI is our pick when a firm wants an AI receptionist that answers every inbound call 24/7 and then chases the lead: it qualifies, books, transfers and takes messages, and follows up by voice, SMS, email, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger. LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you option, a managed appointment-setting service billed pay-per-result that runs on Zian and answers leads in under 60 seconds, 24/7.

Both rivals centre on the call itself; Answering Legal delivers the intake as a message, app notification or CRM record. Zian’s Outbound Appointment Setter and Appointment Show-Specialist agents work the lead afterwards, with SmartReach AI™ orchestrating message, channel and timing and PrecisionPitch AI™ split-testing scripts. Zian works in 30+ languages, Spanish among them, connects to HubSpot, Salesforce, HighLevel and Zapier, and reports 50,769+ qualified sales appointments set.

The honest gap, in one line: Zian is in a partnership-application beta with no published prices, and zian.ai names no conflict-check feature or legal practice-management system as at 6 November 2026, so a Clio firm would connect through Zian’s API or Zapier; each of its three listed plans, including Intel + Widgets (Free Forever), starts with a partnership application.

How we compared them. On 6 November 2026 we read each vendor’s pricing pages, terms, llms.txt and help centres, and fetched all 1,161 URLs in Answering Legal’s sitemap to search them for price, minutes, conflicts and AI. Zian is described only from its published configuration and zian.ai, LeadsNow.ai only from its published claims. “Not named” means we could not find it on those pages as at 6 November 2026. Disclosure: zian.ai publishes this comparison and Zian appears in it.

Who answers a law firm’s phone: a person, AI or both?

Answering Legal is a human service. Its llms.txt says “Every call is answered live, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by U.S.-based receptionists trained specifically for law firms”. Its AI product is a website intake chatbot that it says is “completely free for lawyers”.

Smith.ai sells three models. Its llms.txt puts it this way: “The AI Receptionist is AI-first and human-backed; whereas the Virtual Receptionists service is human-first and AI-backed.” Hybrid sits between them, with three presets: New Client Priority (new clients go to a live agent), Highest Touch (new and existing clients) and After Hours Only (live agents in the day, AI after hours).

The quotable version: Answering Legal always puts a person on a law firm’s call and bills that person’s minutes; Smith.ai lets the firm choose AI, a person or a mix, and bills each call.

What each Smith.ai and Answering Legal plan includes

Smith.ai AI Receptionist, from its AI pricing page:

Plan Calls a month Monthly price Each extra call
Free 25 $0 $3.00
Pro 75 / 150 / 300 $150 / $270 / $500 $2.50 / $2.30 / $2.17
Enterprise 300 / 500 / 1,000+ $500 / $800 / custom $2.17 / $2.10 / custom

Live agent involvement is “billed at a flat rate of +$3.00 per call, only when used”, according to Smith.ai’s live agent billing article; escalations the AI starts itself, outage fallback and transfers to your business are not billed. On the Free plan, Extra Calls, live agent features and appointment booking are each $3 a call and “all OFF by default”, with one call capped at $6, according to its Free plan article.

Smith.ai Hybrid publishes its own monthly estimates on its Hybrid pricing page, beside a “Full human support” comparison:

Calls a month New Client Priority (±30% to live agents) Highest Touch (±50%) After Hours Only (custom setup) Full human support
30 $117 $135 $153 $300
75 $218 $263 $308 $750
90 $252 $306 $360 $810
150 $405 $495 $585 $1,350
300 $771 $951 $1,131 $2,100
500 $1,250 $1,550 $1,850 $3,500

The page prices the presets “from $2.50/call”, “from $3.10/call” and “from $3.70/call”, and Human-first “from $7/call”. Its FAQ says “about 25% of AI-led calls usually require a live agent”; its calculator labels New Client Priority “Estimated escalation: ±30% to live agents”.

Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, from its human pricing page: Starter $300 for 30 calls ($11.50 each extra), Basic $810 for 90 calls ($10.50) and Pro $2,100 for 300 calls ($8.50), with Enterprise priced on request. Included: lead qualification, five short-answer intake questions, one CRM and 24/7 staffing. Per-call add-ons include conflict checks $0.50, booking $1.50, a dedicated Spanish line $1.00, and extended intake $1.50.

Answering Legal publishes no current phone price list: its pricing page asks for your contact details and says “We’ll show you all of our pricing information on the next page”; we did not submit it. Two old blog posts quote prices (a Solo Plan “at a cost of $3.60 per minute”, December 2018; plans “starting at $198 per month”, July 2016), which we treat as out of date. Its billing overview says pricing is determined by “Number of minutes”; its pricing article says “every premium feature is included”, from 24/7 live answering, intake scripts and CRM integrations to bilingual receptionists, scheduling and transfers. Its cost page says “Our average call time is less than 3 minutes”.

Per call or per minute: how each bill is counted

Each vendor argues for its own unit. Smith.ai’s AI pricing FAQ says “Per-minute services work opposite to your needs”; Answering Legal’s pricing blog calls per-minute the method “that makes it clearest what you’re getting for your money”.

Each unit has limits. Smith.ai’s Reasonable Use Policy says calls outside its scope “may incur additional fees to cover time and effort”; Extended Intake must average 120 seconds or less. Answering Legal charges “a per-minute overage rate, detailed in your agreement”. We could not find its billing increment on any of its 1,161 sitemap pages or its Terms as at 6 November 2026; ask for it in writing. Its Terms (last modified 10 April 2026) also say it “will charge Customer’s credit card for a carrier recovery fund of $21.50”.

What a month costs: a solo firm, a 5-lawyer firm and a PI firm

This worked bill uses 75, 300 and 500 calls a month because Smith.ai publishes a Hybrid figure at each, so nothing is interpolated. Answering Legal calls are converted to minutes at 2 and 3 minutes a call, since its stated average is “less than 3 minutes”. Assumptions: every call is answered and billable; no spam credits, tax or add-ons other than those shown; monthly billing, although Smith.ai’s human pricing page offers “a 10% discount for subscribing for 12 months”, its AI pricing page mentions a 6-month plan “at a better rate”, and its AI and Hybrid pages offer volume discounts and custom plans.

Smith.ai service (source) Solo practice, 75 calls 5-lawyer firm, 300 calls PI firm, 500 calls
AI Receptionist, no live agent (AI pricing page) Pro 75: $150.00 ($2.00 a call) Pro or Enterprise 300: $500.00 ($1.67) Enterprise 500: $800.00 ($1.60)
Hybrid New Client Priority, ±30% live (Hybrid page) $218 ($2.91) $771 ($2.57) $1,250 ($2.50)
Hybrid Highest Touch, ±50% live (Hybrid page) $263 ($3.51) $951 ($3.17) $1,550 ($3.10)
Hybrid After Hours Only (Hybrid page) $308 ($4.11) $1,131 ($3.77) $1,850 ($3.70)
Virtual Receptionists (human pricing page) Basic: $810.00 ($10.80); Starter would be $300 + 45 × $11.50 = $817.50 Pro: $2,100.00 ($7.00) Pro: $2,100 + 200 × $8.50 = $3,800.00 ($7.60)
“Full human support” (Hybrid page estimate) $750 ($10.00) $2,100 ($7.00) $3,500 ($7.00)
Answering Legal (per minute) 150 to 225 minutes; price on quote 600 to 900 minutes; price on quote 1,000 to 1,500 minutes; price on quote

At these three volumes the Hybrid figures match, to within $1, Smith.ai’s AI plan price plus its $3.00 live-agent add-on on the stated share (at 300 calls, $500 + 90 × $3.00 = $770 against the published $771); at the FAQ’s 25% the same bill would be $725. Smith.ai’s two pages give different human prices at 75 and 500 calls, so both are shown; the Break-Even table leads with the pricing-page plans you actually sign up to. On human plans, a conflict check ($0.50) and a booking ($1.50) add $2.00 to a new-lead call.

The Break-Even Minute Rule

Because Answering Legal quotes privately, bring this number to its sales call. The Break-Even Minute Rule: divide the per-call bill you already know by the minutes you expect to use; Answering Legal is the lower bill only if its quoted plan, overage and fees, divided by the same minutes, come in under that figure.

Break-even rate per minute, at 2 / 3 minutes a call Solo, 75 calls 5-lawyer, 300 calls PI, 500 calls
Against Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists (pricing page) $5.40 / $3.60 $3.50 / $2.33 $3.80 / $2.53
Against Smith.ai “Full human support” (Hybrid page) $5.00 / $3.33 $3.50 / $2.33 $3.50 / $2.33
Against Hybrid New Client Priority $1.45 / $0.97 $1.29 / $0.86 $1.25 / $0.83
Against Hybrid Highest Touch $1.75 / $1.17 $1.59 / $1.06 $1.55 / $1.03
Against Hybrid After Hours Only $2.05 / $1.37 $1.89 / $1.26 $1.85 / $1.23
Against AI Receptionist, no live agent $1.00 / $0.67 $0.83 / $0.56 $0.80 / $0.53

Read it this way: if your 5-lawyer firm averages 3 minutes a call, Answering Legal’s all-in quote must work out under $2.33 a minute to beat Smith.ai’s human receptionists, under $1.26 to beat Hybrid After Hours Only and under $0.86 to beat Hybrid New Client Priority. Longer intake calls move only the Answering Legal side (within Smith.ai’s Reasonable Use limits), so measure your real average during a trial. For the same arithmetic across other human services, see our virtual receptionist cost comparison; for every Smith.ai AI billing rule, our Smith.ai AI Receptionist cost breakdown.

Conflict checks and intake forms: what each one collects

Smith.ai’s law-firm page lists “Conflict checks” among its legal features. The priced step is on the human side: conflict checks cost $0.50 a call, and its conflict-check help article says the Conflict Checker “is currently only available for Clio, Lawmatics, and Google Sheets”, searches “current clients, previous clients, and leads” by “a first and last name or a business name, not a combination of both”, and “is an add-on to our phone receptionists plans”. Its AI Receptionist has ten law-firm caller types, including “Opposing party”, with optional practice-area qualification; a search of its AI help centre for “conflict” returned only a scheduling article, as at 6 November 2026.

Answering Legal’s intake article says its receptionists can collect “Case details: type of matter, opposing party, court dates, location, injuries, etc.”, and you can “Create different scripts for different practice areas”. We could not find a conflict-check feature on any of its 1,161 sitemap pages as at 6 November 2026 (the only conflict-of-interest mentions were in two guest interviews), so plan for your staff to run the check on the opposing-party name it captures.

Whichever you pick, the supervision duty stays with the firm. ABA Model Rule 5.3(b) says “a lawyer having direct supervisory authority over the nonlawyer shall make reasonable efforts to ensure that the person’s conduct is compatible with the professional obligations of the lawyer”. Rule 5.3(a) requires partners, and lawyers with comparable managerial authority, to make reasonable efforts to ensure the firm has measures in effect giving reasonable assurance that the assistant’s conduct is compatible with the lawyer’s professional obligations. Rule 5.3(c) makes a lawyer responsible for the assistant’s conduct that would breach the Rules of Professional Conduct if a lawyer did it, where the lawyer orders it or, knowing of the specific conduct, ratifies it; or where the lawyer is a partner, has comparable managerial authority or has direct supervisory authority over the person, knows of the conduct when its consequences can be avoided or mitigated, and fails to take reasonable remedial action. Your state’s rule and ethics opinions govern; this is not legal advice. For how the wider field handles conflict steps, see our ranking of AI receptionists for law firms.

Does Smith.ai or Answering Legal connect to Clio?

Both do, to different Clio products. Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist FAQ says it “natively integrates with Salesforce, HubSpot, Clio Grow, Clio Manage, plus 5,000+ apps either natively, or through Zapier and Make”. Its personal-injury page says it connects to “Clio, MyCase, Filevine, CASEpeer, and Lead Docket” through native integrations and Zapier, and adds “Connection depth varies by system”.

Answering Legal’s integrations article lists direct connections to Clio Grow, PracticePanther, Lawmatics, Smokeball, MyCase and Lead Docket, pushing intake into your CRM’s Leads, Contacts, Matters, Activities or Notes; its llms.txt adds Smart Advocate, Litify, Salesforce and Zapier. Its Clio Grow connection uses your Lead Capture Token and sends only new-lead messages, and its Clio Grow page says “Integrations are free to all Answering Legal customers”. We could not find a Clio Manage connection for intake records on its pages as at 6 November 2026.

After hours and Spanish: what each one charges

After hours. All three phone services answer 24/7 at no extra charge: Answering Legal “day or night, weekends and holidays”, Smith.ai’s human plans at the same price at any hour, and its AI Receptionist on every plan.

Spanish. Answering Legal routes Spanish-speaking callers to “a fluent Spanish-English bilingual receptionist”, does the intake in Spanish, sends the message in English and says “No extra fees—this is part of your standard plan”. Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist handles the call in Spanish once you tick “Spanish Language Support”, with transcripts in both languages; its human plans sell a dedicated Spanish line at $1.00 a call.

Trials, contracts and the fine print

Answering Legal. Its help centre describes “The 7-day free trial” with “no credit card required”; another article refers to “your 400-minute free trial”. Its Terms let it end a trial once “The inquirer has used more than 100 minutes of virtual receptionist time”, charge “$175.00 for all trials carried through major holidays” (Thanksgiving and Black Friday are listed), offer no trial from 15 December to 4 January, and charge a $350 setup fee for trials from 5 December to 7 January or $399 to $599 for extensive setup. Service is month-to-month: you cancel by written notice, plans “remain active until the next billing cycle”, and overages remain payable. For the first six months it may review your usage and propose a different plan; for an upgrade it notifies you in advance by email and the prorated increase applies from the date of adjustment, and after that period your account may be reviewed every six months.

Smith.ai. The AI Receptionist “is a month-to-month service” and “If you ever cancel, we need 30 days’ notice”. Its human plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee for new clients covering the plan and add-ons “up to $1,000”, excluding overage.

Where the vendors’ own pages disagree

  • Answering Legal’s trial length. 7 days in one help article, 400 minutes in another, and its Terms let it end a trial past 100 minutes.
  • Answering Legal and AI voice. Its product pages and llms.txt say every call is answered live; its Terms list “AI Voice Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems” among its services.
  • Answering Legal’s fees. Its pricing page says “no setup fees”; its Terms reserve holiday and extensive-setup fees.
  • Smith.ai’s human prices. Its pricing-page plans work out to $810 at 75 calls and $3,800 at 500 (Pro plus 200 overage calls); its Hybrid page’s “Full human support” column gives $750 and $3,500.
  • Smith.ai’s live-agent share. Its Hybrid FAQ says about 25%; its calculator says ±30% for New Client Priority.
  • Smith.ai’s conflict checks. Its law-firm page lists conflict checks; its help article documents them for phone receptionist plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smith.ai or Answering Legal cheaper for a law firm?

Of the two, only Smith.ai publishes a current answering-service price list, so the honest answer is a test. At 75, 300 and 500 calls a month Smith.ai publishes $150, $500 and $800 for its AI Receptionist, $218, $771 and $1,250 for Hybrid New Client Priority (up to $308, $1,131 and $1,850 on its After Hours Only preset), and $810, $2,100 and $3,800 for human receptionists from its pricing-page plans and overage ($750, $2,100 and $3,500 on its Hybrid page). Answering Legal bills by the minute: at 300 calls of 3 minutes it must come in under $2.33 a minute all-in to beat Smith.ai’s human plan. All USD, as at 6 November 2026.

Does Answering Legal use AI to answer calls?

Its product pages say no: its llms.txt says “Every call is answered live, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by U.S.-based receptionists trained specifically for law firms”, and its AI product is a free website chatbot. Its Terms do list “automated attendant and AI Voice Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems” among its services, so ask which applies to you (Answering Legal llms.txt, read 6 November 2026).

Does Smith.ai do conflict checks for law firms?

Yes, on its human plans. Smith.ai’s receptionist pricing page lists conflict checks at $0.50 a call, and its help article says the Conflict Checker works with Clio, Lawmatics and Google Sheets and searches current clients, previous clients and leads by a person’s name or a business name, not both. Its AI Receptionist offers an “Opposing party” caller type; we could not find a conflict-check article in its AI help centre as at 6 November 2026 (Smith.ai help centre).

Does Answering Legal integrate with Clio?

Yes, with Clio Grow. Answering Legal sends new-lead intakes into the Leads section of Clio Grow using your Lead Capture Token, and only new-lead messages are sent. It also lists direct integrations with MyCase, Lawmatics, Smokeball, PracticePanther and Lead Docket, and says integrations are free to all customers. Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist names both Clio Grow and Clio Manage.

Do Smith.ai and Answering Legal answer in Spanish?

Both do. Answering Legal routes Spanish-speaking callers to a bilingual receptionist 24/7, performs the intake in Spanish and sends the message in English, at no extra fee. Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist handles a whole call in Spanish once you switch on Spanish Language Support, and its human plans sell a dedicated Spanish line at $1.00 a call.

How long is the Answering Legal free trial?

Its own pages differ. One help article describes a 7-day free trial with no credit card; another, and its blog, describe 400 free minutes. Its Terms let it end a trial after 100 minutes of receptionist time, rule out trials from 15 December to 4 January, and allow a $175.00 charge for trials that run through major holidays (Answering Legal Terms of Service, last modified 10 April 2026).

Can I cancel Smith.ai or Answering Legal at any time?

Both are month-to-month. Answering Legal takes written notice, starts the cancellation within two business days and keeps the plan active until the next billing cycle, with overages still payable. Smith.ai’s AI Receptionist asks for 30 days’ notice, and its human plans offer new clients a 30-day money-back guarantee up to $1,000, excluding overage.
